Album of Daily Life - Huge Cyclone "Evan"
[The last renewal of this page: Apr. 20, 2013]
A huge cyclone as huge as local people say that they never had one before attacked here.

It was an ultral huge cyclone, which diameter of the eye of cyclone reached to 480Km, and its maximum momentary wind speed reached to 270Km/hour (75m/second).
The peak came at night on December 16. Tremendous wind blew all the way, and my house was vibrating together with the ground in the noise ofrumbling of the ground. I was really scared then.
As I looked outside of my house, I saw a big tree with the roots being pulled out from the ground was flying over the road being layed horizontally, just like a trick movies. That was absolutely my first experience in my life.
Actually, there were many houses which rooves being blown away, and many houses themselves were blown away. The dameges were in a big scale.
The town suffered power failure for a week. (The Skylodge Hotel has a large power generator, and they delivered the power to the cottages in the property, so I was so lucky to have bright lights and air conditioner running while the outside of the property was kept dark during that period.)

In the morning after a night of rumbling of the ground, I came outside and found.........

Everywhere was covered with fallen trees and branches . The street over the fence is unable to go traffic.

Drive ways in the property of Skylodge Hotel that I am living in are completely occupied with fallen trees and branches and there is no way to go through.

The garage of my neighbour's cottage is also blocked up.

Even a large tree has been broken easily. No way to go through.

The roof of the third cottage from my place was damaged bu fallen tree.

This is the main gate of the property to enter from the street outside, but here is also blocked completely by a big tree being fallen. There is not way to remove it by a human power.

As I could not get my private car out, I escaped from the property going through the little space among fallen obstacles, and try to find a taxi. No taxi was running on the main street. I visited a home of taxi driver near here, and ask the driver to run the taxi, as I need to go to the office under the emergency situations.
I saw many fallen trees along the main street. All the signboards were also blown up.

Typical tropical trees lost most branches and showed miserable figure.

I any how arrived at Nadi Airport. All the signboards were blown up or fallen there.

Utility poles are leant like this. No one can tell when they would fall down.
